Der Saphir – das schönste Blau der Natur

Welcome to the fascinating world of sapphires! Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of one of the most impressive gemstones, which has enchanted people all over the world for thousands of years.

The incomparable blue, which ranges from deep, velvety tones to soft, lighter shades, reveals the perfection of nature. The sapphire, with its intense play of colors and symbolic depth, has always had a special significance in different cultures and ages.

The history of this precious blue gemstone is rich and fascinating: once revered in antiquity as a powerful protective stone, the sapphire attained a prominent position as a status symbol of the aristocracy in the Middle Ages. It adorned royal insignia and often functioned as a symbol of power in the splendid jewelry of the nobility.

The blue sapphire also found its place in religious artefacts, as its intense blue embodied spiritual symbolism and was considered a sign of divine wisdom and heavenly purity.

Even today, a sapphire necklace is one of the most popular pieces of jewelry, combining classic elegance and timeless beauty while presenting a perfect balance of tradition and modernity.

Wissenswertes rund um den Saphir

The sapphire belongs to the impressive corundum family, a mineral that comprises some of the most precious and high-quality gemstones in the world.

With a hardness of 9 on the 10-point Mohs scale, the sapphire is one of the hardest colored gemstones in existence, surpassed only by the diamond with its maximum hardness of 10.
This exceptional hardness makes the sapphire an ideal gemstone, especially for artfully crafted sapphire necklaces. The faceted processing gives it an incomparable sparkle and a deep shine that captivates every observer, while its durability makes it a perfect companion for all times.

Interestingly, sapphire was only recognized as a mineral in its own right at the beginning of the 19th century. Prior to this, numerous other blue gemstones were also assigned to it.

The characteristic color of a sapphire is created by trace elements such as iron, titanium, chromium or vanadium. These metals influence the color of the gemstone.
A high proportion of iron and titanium provides the archetypal blue hue that has made this gemstone famous.
The color palette of sapphires ranges from radiant cornflower blue to royal, deep, rich velvet blue.

Interestingly, the exact color varies depending on the origin and location of the stone, which means that each sapphire tells its own story - almost like a fingerprint of nature. Particularly valuable are those specimens with an intense dark blue; the deeper and richer the hue, the higher their estimated value. The sapphire thus remains an incomparable symbol of elegance, durability and natural splendor - a true masterpiece of the earth.

Eine Saphirkette kann aber muss nicht blau sein

Sapphire holds a special place among colored gemstones due to its exceptional hardness of nine on the Mohs scale. No other gemstone offers such a combination of hardness, color variety and visual elegance.

The sapphire appears in numerous colors, including blue, yellow, pink, pink, green, orange and even in two-tone varieties, making it an extremely desirable gemstone.

Another prominent member of the corundum gemstone family is the ruby, whose characteristic red color makes it one of the most well-known gemstones in the world. Unlike the red ruby, the sapphire spreads a colorful fan of color variety and luminosity.

Sapphires are particularly attractive when they are used in necklaces. Due to the refraction of light and the interplay of their facets, they virtually radiate and lend every piece of jewelry an unmistakable shine.
In addition, many sapphires have pleochroic properties, which means that they can show different shades of color depending on the angle from which they are viewed. Sapphires therefore look different in daylight than in warm or artificial light.

A fascinating special form is the so-called star sapphire, which stands out from the crowd due to its unique optical effect - known as asterism. The effect is created by the targeted appearance of rutile needles, which are arranged in at least two different directions within the crystal. This creates a star-shaped pattern that is particularly impressive under optimal lighting. Star sapphires can have stars with six, four or, in extremely rare cases, even twelve rays. However, this special effect only unfolds in cabochon-cut gemstones, as only this cut shapes the surface in such a way that the light is ideally reflected.
Due to their unusual appearance, star sapphires are rarely used in classic sapphire necklaces, as their special appearance does not really come into its own there.

The origin of the sapphire is as varied as its coloration. The best-known sites are in India, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Australia, Brazil, Zambia, Kenya and Madagascar.

These countries are known worldwide for their traditional gemstone production and supply high-quality specimens that attract international attention due to their splendid colors and perfect workmanship.
